LODZ –THE EUROPEAN CITY OF CULTURE
Lodz is one of the most significant culture centres in Poland. The huge industrial metropolis of the 19th century is now again experiencing the fastest development among Polish cities. The rise of the industry is enhancing the cultural movement. That is one of the reasons why our city is perfectly prepared for becoming the European Capital of Culture 2016
Lodz not only does fulfill all the criteria necessary to receive this title but also has many additional qualities valuable for the project European Capital of Culture. The receival of this prestigious title will undoubtedly bring us greater possibilities for development and it has a chance to become one of the decisive moments in the history of the city.
Lodz has interesting and miscellaneous culture heritage. This is mainly by dint of rich museal collections. Speaking of the art heirdom what has to mention the Lodz avant-garde that was broadly known in Poland and in wide world. Other actions of the art circle are connected mainly with the Art Museum, the Lodz Film School and with the artistic groups: The International Artists’ Museum, Lodz Kaliska and The Workshop of the Film Form.
Lodz is first of all the city of festivals. Among the biggest are the Festival of the Dialogue of Four Cultures, Camerimage and Lodz Biennale. It is also worth to mention such international events as the Explorer Festival, the Festival of Photography or the International Comic Strip Festival. Despite the big amount of cyclic events, each year some new festivals appear, mainly in the branches of film, modern art and music.
Lodz as the european center of culture and art in 2016 is not an extremely distant idea but a collective strategy of the cultural growth for the next 10 years. This plan will certainly result in the development of the tourist market to the European scale, it will strenghten the image of Łódź as the city of culture and art, and above all will bring the consolidation of the entire circle connected with the culture.
Let’s build the European Capital of Culture!
